Frigoscandia installs Europe’s largest mobile racking system

Frigoscandia recently installed the largest mobile racking system in Europe at its state-of-the-art logistics facility in Hyllinge, Sweden.

The 387,500-sq.-ft. cold storage hub, which came online in November, accommodates diverse temperature requirements for food logistics, with frozen, chilled, and ambient zones, and boasts approximately 100,000 pallet positions. Stow International’s cutting-edge mobile racking system is at the core of the facility, helping Frigoscandia maximize storage capacity by eliminating static aisles, the companies reported.

“This project has been a remarkable collaboration between Stow and Frigoscandia,” Valentina Akesson, Stow project manager, said in a news release.

“The successful completion of this installation demonstrates the capabilities of our mobile racking systems. Projects like this are pivotal in establishing stow as a leader in powerful racking systems, and we’re proud to have delivered a solution that meets the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.”

Stow began developing a customized design that aligns with the building’s specifications, such as load capacities and floor requirements, in August 2023. The storage solutions company transitioned to the assembly phase in June 2024, erecting 12-meter-high racking structures, preassembling advanced mobile trolleys, integrating sophisticated control systems, and fine-tuning the entire setup to ensure optimal performance.

The system enables Frigoscandia, a Nordic leader in temperature-controlled logistics, to store more inventory within the same footprint, with the frozen storage zone covering 196,980 sq. ft. and reaching temperatures as low as minus-25 degrees Celsius. The scalable solution also supports the facility’s environmental ambitions, contributing to BREEAM Excellent certification through features such as solar panels and energy-efficient operations.
