Henningsen Cold Storage Company received USDA Organic Certification after Oregon Tilth evaluated its Portland OR facilities. Both of the company’s Portland warehouses met the requirements set forth by USDA’s National Organic Program.
Among other things, organic certification requires extensive effort and documentation to ensure organic products never commingle with non-organic products.
Organic food consumption has grown significantly in the past 15 years, with sales increasing from $3.5 billion in 1996 to $28.6 billion in 2010. In addition, the amount of American land dedicated to organic crops has doubled since 1997.
Henningsen, anticipating the growing demand for organic products, responded by making its Portland warehouses USDA Organic-certified. Oregon Tilth is a non-profit organization and is also an accredited USDA organic certification agency.
