DRS Technologies Inc. has received a $16.2 million order to provide Multi-Temperature Refrigeration Container System (MTRCS) units to the United States Army’s Natick Soldier Systems Center at Natick MA.
The full-rate production order is part of a previously awarded fixed price five-year Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract award worth $43.6 million, which was awarded to the company in January 2004. Production work will take place at the company’s DRS Sustainment Systems unit in Florence KY. Product deliveries will occur in May and June 2009.
MTRCS is the follow-on generation of refrigeration systems, intended to replace the Refrigerated Container System, also produced by DRS in Florence. MTRCS can transport and store both refrigerated and frozen products in a single container. The system consists of an insulated 8-foot x 8-foot x 20-foot International Organization for Standardization shipping container with an engine-driven refrigeration unit that can operate while on the move. The two compartments are separated by a movable partition, which allows for varied proportions of refrigerated and frozen storage.
The MTRCS will be used principally by U.S. Army Subsistence Platoons and Brigade Combat Teams Maneuver elements. It also will be used by medical units to transport and store refrigerated medical supplies, including blood products.
