Coop Norge Handel AS plans to build near the Norwegian capital Oslo a distribution center that will cover all temperature levels. With revenue of 4 billion euros and a market share of 24%, Coop is the second-largest food retailer in Norway.

The formal order was received by the general contractor WITRON Logistik + Informatik Gmbh from Coop recently. The WITRON logistics team won the design competition with a future-oriented overall concept, successful completion of many projects, and lower cost-per-case handling.

“The complete concept impressed us regarding its cost-efficiency, ergonomics, energy efficiency, and flexibility,“ said Halvor Nassvik with Coop. The company relies on the automated WITRON logistics systems OPM, DPS, CPS, and ETP.

This facility has a capacity of about 50,000 square meters (535,000 square feet), and from this warehouse Coop will supply eastern areas of Norway. The distribution center will also cover the central warehouse function for slow-moving and special items for Coop’s 850 stores throughout Norway. The site will hold nearly 12,500 different articles/SKUs from the dry-assortment, fresh assortment (36˚ F), as well as the frozen product assortment (–13˚ F) and fruit and vegetable products (45˚ F and 54˚ F).

All pallet/stacker cranes and conveyors will be built by the WITRON subsidiary FAS, equipped with environmentally friendly power-saving and synchronous propulsion technology. The material flow in all stock areas and temperature zones employs innovative design and superior logistic efficiency.

WITRON supplied the design and will supply the IT, PLC-controls, and all mechanics. Technical service and operation of the logistics center will be managed by a WITRON on-site team.
