Discover how an order for 11,100 state-of-the-art reefer containers will bolster the Hapag-Lloyd fleet.

Hapag-Lloyd has invested further in its container fleet with an order for 11,100 state-of-the-art reefer containers. These new containers will be integrated into the company’s fleet of 91,000 reefer containers, with delivery starting in August and gradually being completed by December 2018.

The company has a significant footprint in the refrigerated container market, continuously investing in new reefer equipment in recent years and also renewing a sizable share of its fleet.

Since 2015—and including the most recent order—the shipping company has purchased 30,550 new reefers to ensure that it can offer modern equipment and seasonal availability to its clients, especially during peak times such as harvesting seasons of fruits or vegetables.

“We experience very positive feedback from our clients on our ability to deliver consistent quality services in the reefer business,” said Clemens Holz, Hapag-Lloyd’s director–reefer products. “Furthermore, we see increasing demand from clients to transport temperature-sensitive goods. To benefit from additional opportunities in this attractive market segment, we have decided to increase our reefer fleet.”

Production of the new reefers has begun, with the first series of 40-foot containers. Two thousand of these new containers are equipped with Controlled Atmosphere, a technology used to slow down ripening and extend shelf life of fruits and vegetables. The state-of-the-art containers will also have highly efficient cooling units that consume much less energy, without any change in performance and temperature precision.

“The new reefer containers undergo intensive tests before they are made available for our customers to transport their valuable freight,” said Frank Nachbar, director–container engineering and maintenance.

Besides food products, Hapag-Lloyd also transports other sensitive products in reefer containers, such as high-value pharmaceuticals.
