Provider of onboard power generation for transport refrigeration units teams with Electrofit Industrial to deliver environmentally friendly, cost-effective cold chain solutions.

United Kingdom-based Electrofit Industrial Solutions and Hultsteins, a Swedish manufacturer of onboard power generation systems for transport refrigeration units, recently joined forces to deliver environmentally friendly and cost-effective solutions for temperature-controlled transportation.

“We offer solutions tailored to significantly reduce energy usage and costs,” Steve Noble, EIS director, said in a news release. “Working with Hultsteins and their cost-saving sustainability products, we aim to bring cost- and carbon-reducing benefits to operators of temperature-controlled vehicles in the U.K.”

Based in Dunstable, EIS services include energy management, waste reduction, resource optimization, and emissions control. Meanwhile, Hultsteins, pioneers in sustainable refrigeration, is becoming a leading choice for refrigerated carriers who want to comply with emissions regulations while providing low-cost, reliable transport for perishable goods.

“Our mission is to optimize energy consumption and keep operator costs and harmful emissions down, while reducing both electricity and diesel fuel consumption,” Noble added. “To this end, the combination of SulNOxEco [diesel conditioner] and, for example, Hultsteins’ Ecogen, provides what we believe to be the optimum commercial solution, and we look forward to recommending it to our customers.”

Electrofit’s SulNOxEco contains a fuel additive that’s compatible with all diesel, biofuel, and petroleum fuel types, the company said. It is made from natural, biodegradable ingredients that reduce fuel consumption while keeping maintenance and vehicle downtime to a minimum.

“I am looking forward to working with EIS and their customers who operate temperature-controlled vehicles to reduce emissions and cost,” said Graham Usher, Hultsteins U.K. managing director.

Diesel units currently used to power most of the U.K.’s approximately 40,000 reefer trailers aren’t governed by the same standards as the tractors that tow them, EIS and Hultsteins reported. These diesel-powered TRU engines are “combustion-to-atmosphere” equipment classified as Tier 2 or 3, meaning there is no particulate or filtration capture. These engines emit high levels of diesel particulate matter (DPM) and nitrous oxide (N0x), which are cancer-causing carcinogens, according to the World Health Organization.
