Knight Transportation orders 370 Volvo VNs

Knight Transportation has placed an order for 370 Volvo VN trucks equipped with selective catalytic reduction (SCR) emissions control technology. Volvo Trucks North America will begin deliveries of these trucks to the Phoenix AZ-based Knight Transportation fleet in April 2010.

A long-standing Volvo customer, Knight Transportation has about 3,000 Volvo VNs in its 3,736-truck fleet. Volvo’s SCR system produces near-zero emissions while meeting the EPA2010 regulations without the use of stockpiled emissions credits. It also improves fuel economy by up to 5%.

“We want to have this new technology from Volvo,” said Dave Williams, Knight Transportation’s vice-president of equipment and maintenance. “We will gain fuel economy. We’ve tested the technology, and we’re comfortable with it. These trucks are better for the environment—and they’re better for us.”

Volvo Trucks had produced and invoiced 85 EPA2010-certified trucks for customers and dealers as of January 20.

“Volvo has invested many years of development in SCR technology, and we know it is clearly the best way to reduce emissions while improving fuel economy,” said Scott Kress, Volvo Trucks senior vice-president–sales and marketing. “We’re gratified Knight’s management recognized the benefits of Volvo’s technology, and we think their example will help others in the industry make the same choice.”
