Samsara details how its data is making fleets smarter

June 16, 2022
The transportation technology company opened its Bay Area user conference focusing on digitization and how that data can help fleets make smarter, more profitable decisions.

SAN FRANCISCO—Samsara used the opening day of its Beyond 2022 user conference to show how its Connected Operations Cloud is digitizing fleets and making them more intelligent and efficient.

“We at Samsara believe the next big wave of technology transformation is not just about connecting people, it’s about connecting things—everything,” Sanjit Biswas, Samsara co-founder and CEO, said during his keynote address at the Intercontinental Hotel San Francisco. “We think the most important part about all this is the data because that's what the smartphone wave—the smartphone revolution—taught us is the value of this data is absolutely tremendous because it makes it possible to make smarter decisions.”

To help fleets make those smarter decisions, the transportation technology company unveiled new solutions to help its customers see physical operations data to increase their operational efficiency, worker safety, business resiliency, and fuel efficiency.

Since Liberty Energy, an oil and gas equipment and services company, has been using Samsara’s open API for its equipment, the fleet reported saving 10,000 hours and $300,000 in administrative costs last year. It also created a custom integration with Samsara and Liberty’s tax service provider to track assets for state tax purposes. Michael Tuomi, Liberty’s HSE manager, said the company expects to save $10 million this year thanks to that tracking data.

New Samsara offerings for 2022

Kiren Sekar, chief product officer at Samsara, said the company is investing in innovations to simplify day-to-day tasks, keep drivers safe, and make their workplaces more connected. These new features announced at Beyond 2022 include:

  • Driver Workflows is designed to guide drivers and field operators through the most mission-critical parts of their day. With the general availability of end-of-day workflows, linked third-party tasks, and multiple workflows in the Samsara Driver App, administrators can keep drivers safe and compliant, streamline access to tasks in external apps, and customize workflows to drivers’ needs.
  • In-Cab Nudges encourages drivers to self-correct risky behavior after receiving an AI-powered in-cab alert—before a manager is notified. This aims to give drivers more ownership over their own coaching and safety on the road. It also saves managers time on event review so they can focus on coaching the riskiest driving habits. In-Cab Nudges will be available in open beta this fall.
    • Multi-Stop ETAs provides dispatch and operations teams with up-to-date predicted arrival times at all stops along all active routes. With end-to-end visibility into real-time trip progress, customers can deliver more timely service that exceeds their customers’ expectations from the first mile to the last mile. Multi-Stop ETAs is now generally available.
      • Remote Support allows administrators to view and control mobile devices from anywhere to streamline troubleshooting, increase productivity, and support workers whether on the road or in the field. Remote Support will be available in open beta this fall.

        Connecting everything in operations

Samsara is creating a partner ecosystem to connect all aspects of physical operations for customers with disparate data streams from multiple applications. Samsara captures all the data into a single screen and guides customers to access, analyze, and act on that data. The Samsara App Marketplace features over 155+ integrations leveraging Samsara's open API to streamline data sharing.

The company announced at the conference that it is integrating with General Motors and Free2move, the global fleet and mobility company that is part of Stellantis. Samsara is bringing additional embedded telematics data from both companies to its Connected Operations Cloud.

        Cold chain data access

Samsara customers can now gain real-time visibility into data from Thermo King reefer units through a new, cloud-based integration. By eliminating additional hardware or installation requirements, this integration delivers deployment and reduced costs while surfacing actionable insights more efficiently, according to the company.

Samsara’s new integration with Thermo King is now available in early access to customers.
