Walmart, Platform Science partner for real-time visibility

June 23, 2022
The retail giant has partnered with the telematics provider to equip its entire fleet with tablets increasing shipment visibility. Walmart's more than 12,000 drivers can use the onboard NTransit software to coordinate deliveries.

Platform Science has partnered with Walmart to install tablets in every truck of the retailer’s private fleet. Every cab is now equipped with the tablet that integrates with NTransit, Walmart’s proprietary workflow software application designed to offer near real-time visibility to drivers, stores, and warehouses, according to a press release by Scott Donahue, Walmart vice president of innovation and automation product.

The NTransit software increases visibility so that stores can anticipate load arrival times and plan their days and labor around truck deliveries. Additionally, Walmart customers will see a more accurate inventory of products available for purchase online.

The technology integrates with store applications to help drivers communicate more closely with stores. As the driver approaches a store, geolocation technology detects the driver’s location, sending push notifications to store associates' handheld devices, allowing them to plan for unloading and turnaround. NTransit is also able to send secure audio messages directly to drivers while they are on the road.

The goal is to create a frictionless workflow so drivers can spend more time driving the truck and less time waiting at fulfillment centers or store deliveries. Platform Science and NTransit will coordinate scheduling and navigation, so drivers can hit the road to their next destination without punching it in the tablet.

NTransit allows drivers to take credit they deserve for the work they do, including unplanned activities.

The new system creates accountability by allowing drivers to communicate what they accomplished on the road. That way, they are compensated for any miles and non-driving activities beyond what was initially planned. The technology has resulted in an increase in driver satisfaction, according to the press release.
