Motive launches First Responder service for commercial vehicle drivers

Oct. 17, 2024
The new First Responder feature ensures drivers receive immediate help when a collision is detected by dispatching emergency services quickly, helping to reduce fatalities and severe injuries as well as setting a new level of safety for drivers.

NASHVILLE, Tennessee—Motive, an AI-powered integrated operations platform, recently announced a First Responder service for commercial vehicle drivers that expedites emergency response in the event of a severe collision at the American Trucking Associations Management Conference and Exhibition.

Once Motive detects a collision, it sends critical accident and vehicle information to the driver’s dispatcher, along with a phone number for the 911 center closest to the accident. Once the dispatcher calls for emergency services, that critical information from First Responder is sent to the 911 center, ensuring the driver receives help as quickly as possible.

“First Responder transforms the way we support drivers in a collision and will save lives,” Shoaib Makani, co-founder and CEO of Motive, said. “By reducing the time it takes for 911 to verify incidents and dispatch help, we are taking a critical step toward achieving zero harm and zero preventable accidents, keeping everyone on the road safer.”

Motive developed First Responder through a partnership with RapidSOS, a safety platform that connects 540 million devices nationwide to provide supplemental information to 911 centers.

With the RapidSOS integration, “all the key information from our camera—the video, the location, information about the driver, the type of accident—is all integrated within the RapidSOS system, and this is the information that the dispatch center sees on their end, Abhishek Gupta, VP of product at Motive, said.

This ensures that the emergency telecommunicator sends the appropriate response team.

“Now [with the Motive First Responder partnership], when that 911 call comes in, that telecommunicator is going to see all of that information and be able to process that call with an accurate response,” White explained. A fast response is wonderful, but if it’s not an accurate response and a targeted response, the outcomes are not as good.

Driver safety starts with quick and accurate detection. Motive can detect 99% of severe collisions “within seconds” through a combination of Motive’s AI cameras and a safety team that analyzes camera footage, Gupta explained.

That quick and accurate collision detection could make the difference between life and death during a collision. Survival rates increase by 13% for every minute that first responders arrive faster at the scene of a crash, Motive reports. First Responder ensures drivers receive the urgent care they need even faster, reducing the time it takes for 911 to verify incidents and helping dispatchers deploy appropriate resources faster, according to Motive.

Motive said its new First Responder does the following:

  • Improves the speed and accuracy of emergency response by programmatically sharing life-saving collision data, such as vehicle location, driver name, make, model, license plate, and other important information, directly to first responders.
  • Shares live updates through the Motive Dashboard and Fleet App, ensuring safety managers have clear visibility and know that first responders have been notified.
  • Delivers a priority phone number to enable customers to bypass long wait times and get immediately connected to emergency dispatchers near the collision.

“I cannot overstate the importance of a technology that initiates rapid emergency response,” Jared Whitson, director of safety for the Bennett Family of Companies, said. “The preservation of life and the prevention of further injury depends on seconds, not minutes. Motive’s AI-powered collision detection and First Responder will bring an essential layer of safety to drivers and provide organizations with confidence that accurate information is provided to emergency services. This technology will set a new standard for the industry.”
