• Diesel, gas prices drop nationwide

    The national averages for diesel and gas fell this week to $3.635 and $3.078, respectively.

    National gas and diesel prices drop this week: Key regional updates and trends

    Diesel and gasoline prices dropped across the board in the U.S. this week. The new national diesel price average is $3.635, a 6-cent drop from last week, according to data released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on March 3. 

    Here are this week’s diesel price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

    • Gulf Coast: This coast saw the most significant drop in diesel prices this week to $3.343. This is a 7-cent decrease from last week’s average of $3.420. 
    • Midwest: The next biggest price drop occurred in the fly-over states, with an average diesel price of $3.551, a 6-cent decrease. 
    • West Coast: Surprisingly, the West Coast decreased 5 cents this week to $4.303. 
    • East Coast: This coast also experienced a 5-cent decrease to 3.742. 
    • Rocky Mountain: The Rockies saw the smallest decrease this week of a rounded-up 2 cents to $3.478

    Alternatively, AAA Motor Club lists the national diesel price average at $3.652. This average is 2 cents higher than the EIA’s current average but 2 cents lower than AAA’s average from last week. AAA has tracked diesel prices' slow decline for the past three weeks.

    Gas prices continue to fall

    According to EIA, the current national gasoline price average is $3.078, a 5-cent decrease compared to last week and a 3-cent decrease compared to this time last year.

    Here are this week’s gasoline price highlights from each region of the U.S.:

    • Gulf Coast: Like diesel prices this week, the biggest drop in gasoline prices came from the Gulf Coast. Gas prices here dropped 7 cents to $2.636. 
    • Midwest: The next biggest drop was in the Midwest at 6 cents to $2.882.
    • Rocky Mountain: The Rockies dropped 5 cents to $2.964. 
    • West Coast: This coast experienced a decrease of 5 cents to $4.141. 
    • East Coast: The smallest drop in gas prices was off this coast. Gas prices here dropped 3 cents to $2.977.

    However, AAA Motor Club is measuring this week’s national gasoline price average a little higher, at $3.097. This is 5 cents lower than AAA’s average from last week, $3.144, but significantly lower than the average price from this time last year, $3.346.
