Rivian solidifies its entrance into the commercial segment, opening sales of the Rivian Commercial Van to U.S. fleets

Feb. 10, 2025
Rivian has opened the order books for its commercial product. The announcement comes less than one year after the company expressed interest in the broad commercial market via a partnership with JBPCO.

Rivian Automotive has opened the order books for its commercial product, the Rivian Commercial Van.

“We are so excited to announce that the Rivian Commercial Van is now available for purchase,” Tom Solomon, senior director of business development at Rivian, told FleetOwner, “and we believe our van will be an industry leader in fleet vehicles.”

The Commercial Van is built on the same platform as the Amazon custom electric delivery van, which Rivian designed from the ground up exclusively for the e-commerce giant.

“Amazon currently has more than 20,000 in its fleet and delivered over a billion packages from its Electric Delivery Vans in 2024 alone,” Tom Solomon, senior director of business development at Rivian, said in a Rivian press release.

This latest announcement comes a little more than a year since Amazon and Rivian announced the end of their exclusionary agreement in November 2023, and nearly one year since Rivian announced its partnership with Morgan Olson, a division of work truck and van body giant J.B. Poindexter and Co., which was Rivian’s first foray into the commercial vehicle segment apart from Amazon.

The 2024 announcement indicated Rivian’s intention to make a name for itself in the fleet space, “and partnerships like [the one with Morgan Olson] are foundational to it,” Solomon told FleetOwner at the time.

The Rivian Commercial Van that U.S. fleets can now order features a Rivian-made chassis and body. The EV manufacturer's commercial product comes in two sizes: the 500 and the slightly larger 700.

The Rivian Commercial Van 500 is best for “city streets and tight corners,” according to Rivian. It features an estimated range of 161 miles, a GVWR of 9,350 lb., and a payload of 2,734 lb. With a cargo volume of 487 cu. ft. and a wheelbase of 157.5 inches, the vehicle is suited for congested areas and maneuvering around city streets.

The Rivian Commercial Van 700 is best for “more cargo and extra storage,” with an estimated range of 153 miles, a GVWR of 9,500 lb., and a payload of 2,513 lb. Its cargo volume of 652 cu. ft. and wheelbase of 187 inches amplifies storage capacity.

The Commercial Van's design prioritizes safety, driver comfort, total cost of ownership, and sustainability. Safety features include automatic emergency braking, collision warnings, and 360-degree visibility, “meaning the Rivian Commercial Van is engineered to be among the safest vehicles on the road today,” the brand stated in a press release.

Further, Commercial Van owners can take advantage of Rivian software in their fleet vehicles. Rivian offers a telematics solution, real-time vehicle health tracking, remote commands for features such as locking and unlocking doors, advanced analytics, and more.

Solomon also added that the Commercial Van is low maintenance, and its advanced software and ergonomics “make it an investment that will pay off over time.”

For more than one year, Rivian has trialed the Commercial Van with several large fleets in the U.S. and worked to prepare its fleet management offerings for the mass market. These pilots have helped pave the way to enable Rivian to open sales further, the press release states.

“Over the last year, we have been focusing our efforts on testing with some larger fleets, and we’re really pleased with how those trials have gone,” Solomon said in a release. “As a result, we’re excited to now be able to open sales to fleets of all sizes in the U.S., whether they want one van or thousands.”

The response from both fleet leaders and drivers who have participated in those pilots has been positive, Solomon said, though he declined to share which companies were piloting the Commercial Vans.

2024 was also a year for Rivian to prepare its business to support fleets across the nation.

“Rivian spent the last year … preparing our business to ensure we can successfully deliver fleet services to many fleet customers at scale,” Solomon said. “We’ve focused on building out our service infrastructure, digital infrastructure, and gathering feedback via pilots from fleet customers.”

Because the Commercial Van product shares a platform with the Rivian Electric Delivery Van (Amazon’s custom van), the vehicle’s production is ongoing. Fleets can register their interest in the Rivian Commercial Van at rivian.com/fleet.
