The Iowa Soybean Association (ISA) has announced the opening of Iowa Renewable Energy, LLC, a new biodiesel plant capable of producing 30 million gallons per year of the alternative fuel. The state-of-the-art facility, located in the industrial park on the east edge of Washington, IA, is equipped for multiple feedstocks, including animal fats.
“We’ve been working on this project for the past two years and it stayed on schedule throughout the construction period,” said John Heisdorffer, a member of ISA’s board of directors and chairman of the ISA Demand Committee. “The plant has even started production a month early.” Heisdorffer, a Keota, IA, soybean farmer, also serves on the board of directors of Iowa Renewable Energy, LLC.
According to ISA, the new facility is the fifth one opened by Renewable Energy Group (REG), which worked on construction of the biodiesel plant with private investors who own it. REG will continue to play a role in on-going plant management and marketing of the biodiesel it produces.
REG markets SoyPower biodiesel fuel to fuel distributors and customers in industries including on-highway fleets.. “REG is excited to partner with Iowa Renewable Energy LLC to product high-quality biodiesel that will be available to our customers nationwide,” commented Daniel Oh, COO of REG.
