The Freightliner Trucks division of Daimler Trucks North America unveiled a vocational version of its Coronado Class 8 highway tractor, dubbed the Coronado Severe Duty (SD) model, at the International Construction and Utility Equipment Exposition being held this week in Louisville.

The OEM said the Coronado SD is designed for severe-duty applications. It boasts both set-back and set-forward axle configurations; a fiberglass hood; an all-aluminum cab; 90-degree hood tilt to provide easy engine access for daily checks; and fenders that come standard with impact absorbing material to help eliminate damage and cracks common with vocational operations.

The interior of the Coronado SD model, however, retains the premium accents of its highway brethren, such as double-sealed doors and well-sealed windows to keep out noise, dust and other contaminants; switches and instruments backlit by LEDs for non-glare nighttime viewing; and extra-large panels that provide greater flexibility for gauge combinations and allow for the installation of radios and navigation systems.

The Coronado SD is engineered to be “2010-ready” and can be equipped with Detroit Diesel DD13, DD15, and DD16 engines, as well as the Cummins ISX. All these powerplants use selective catalytic reduction (SCR) technology to reduce NOx emissions down to the levels required by 2010 EPA engines standards. The Coronado SD can be equipped with the Detroit Diesel’s BlueTec 1-Box package as an option, which combines the diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF) and SCR catalyst into one component.

Richard Shearing, director of product strategy for Freightliner Trucks, said the Coronado SD is now the “flagship vocational product” for the Freightliner brand, encompassing its most advanced technological innovations.

"We focused on and have delivered what is needed to get the job done – a resilient and sturdy truck that is easily maintained out of the shop,” added Melissa Clausen, director of product marketing for Freightliner Trucks. “And when the Coronado SD does need to go into the shop for regular maintenance, we've made it easy to get it serviced and back on the job quickly.”
