Dec. 1, 2007
Chevrolet recently introduced its 2009 Silverado Hybrid full-size pickup, which the OEM said achieves 40% better fuel economy in city driving, as well as 25% improvement in overall fuel economy. The vehicle combines GM's 2-Mode Hybrid system with a 6.0L gasoline V-8, providing electric-only power while driving at low speeds, saving fuel even when the truck is fully loaded or towing up to 6,100 lb.

The hybrid is scheduled for release in late 2008.

Based on the 2007 Silverado platform, it will be available in 2WD and 4WD crew cab versions. It will feature the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system, a locking rear axle, trailering package and dual-stage frontal and head curtain-side air bags.

The vehicle saves fuel through GM's electrically variable transmission (EVT) and 300V nickel-metal hydride energy storage system (ESS), the company said. With GM's 2-Mode Hybrid system, electric power is generated by the system itself. When the brakes are applied or the vehicle is coasting, electric motors create electricity that is then stored in the 300V battery. This stored energy is used to power the vehicle, and the regenerative braking cycle is renewed.

The OEM said the electric motor is less than half the size of those used in single-mode hybrid systems.
