The OTC 5280 Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) Cleaner from toolmaker SPX can remove accumulated soot from the aftertreatment system in about 30 minutes, according to the manufacturer. Used with diesel engines since 2007 to meet Federal emissions requirements, DPFs turn particulate matter in the exhaust into ash that must periodically be removed either through cleaning or DPF replacement.

The new OTC cleaner is a moveable unit designed for shop use, according to SPX. Housed in a HEPA-filtered cabinet, it has a microprocessor control unit that allows technicians to select from a variety of OEM cleaning parameters for start-to-finish unmonitored cleaning that meets engine-maker requirements.

A patented high-pressure cleaning process delivers an average cleaning cycle of 30 minutes with 92% removal of DPF ash, according to SPX. It features hydraulic cylinders and pump that provide 18 inches of travel and up to 2,200 pounds of clamp force, enabling it to handle DPF heights from 9.5 inches to 28.5 inches.

“At a suggested list price of $20,000 and an average price of $450 per cleaning to the service center, the OTC 5280 can pay for itself in as few as 45 cleanings, although actual prices will vary,” said Eric Adamson, SPX Service Solutions product manager of equipment and heavy-duty tools.
