Volvo unveils factory-installed cab cooling system

Optional battery-powered “parking cooler” can last 10 hours.

Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) is introducing a new factory-installed battery-powered “parking cooler” as an optional feature on its VNM 630, VNL 630, VNL 670, VNL 730 and VNL 780 sleeper models.

Jason Spence, Volvo Trucks product marketing manager for long haul, said the system will allow drivers to keep the cab and sleeper comfortable at 74 degrees Fahrenheit for up to 10 hours, even during the heat of the day, without idling the tractor’s diesel engine.

He added that system is “ideal” for long haul drivers who run their trucks at least six hours, then park for their required break.

“With regulations varying from state to state – and even city to city – the parking cooler eliminates the guessing game when it comes to anti-idling rules while maximizing driver comfort, lowering fuel costs and reducing emissions,” Spence noted.

The unit’s power comes from the combined energy of the truck starting batteries paired with four AGM [absorbed glass mat] deep cycle batteries located in the in-frame battery box.

It’s operated by an automatic thermostat that controls both the air conditioning and heat if the truck is equipped with the optional cab parking heater.

The OEM pointed out that the thermostat allows the driver to simply set one temperature plus the fan speed to maintain optimal cab comfort. And, as a factory-installed option, the battery-powered parking cooler is fully integrated with the sleeper duct work, Volvo said.
