Product Spotlight: Diesel additives for 2025

Dec. 23, 2024
A look at 10 products fueling the trucking industry.

Amsoil

Amsoil's diesel All-in-One fuel additive combines the benefits of Amsoil Diesel Injector Clean, Diesel Cold Flow, and Diesel Cetane Boost in one package. According to the company, the additive delivers enhanced detergency, improved lubricity, better cold flow, and higher cetane, as well as all-season protection and performance. One ounce treats up to 2.5 gallons of fuel.

Biobor

Multifunctional diesel fuel conditioners Biobor DC+Cetane (for warm weather) and Biobor DC+Cetane Winter (for cold weather) are designed to enhance the stability, operability, and performance of ultra-low sulfur diesel fuels. According to the company, the components of Biobor DC+Cetane and Biobor DC+Cetane Winter provide fuel stability, added lubricity, detergency, and water/corrosion control. Biobor DC+Cetane Winter also provides anti-gelling. The company claims that, with continued use, these products will enhance the performance and life of diesel fuel while protecting and cleaning vital engine components, maintaining fuel economy, and reducing emissions.

CRC Industries

Diesel fuel additives from CRC are formulated to clean, lubricate, and protect diesel engines under the extreme demands of winter and other operating conditions to ensure maximum performance and efficiency. According to the company, CRC Diesel Fuel Therapy diesel injector cleaner with anti-gel adds lubricity to low sulfur fuel, prevents fuel gelling, lowers pour point, increases mpg, and cleans injectors. In addition, it is said to prevent corrosion, improve power, reduce smoke, and stabilize fuel.

Diesel Direct

With winter just around the corner, Diesel Direct’s proprietary Winter’z Edge formulation helps provide critical cold-weather protection for commercial diesel fleets and equipment. Its unique, alcohol-free additive is included in every gallon of fuel delivered directly to fleets during winter months or available in convenient jug sizes. The company says its Winter’z Edge helps prevent issues caused by water accumulation, such as fuel line icing and filter blockages, which can lead to costly downtime. Proper storage tank maintenance, along with Winter’z Edge, ensures peak operability throughout winter.

Hot Shot's Secret

In extreme cold weather, commercial utility fleets are at risk of downtime. Diesel fuel gels when the paraffin in the diesel fuel starts to crystallize. With enough exposure to cold temperatures, diesel fuel produces a solid wax-like substance that can restrict the flow of fuel or clog the entire fuel system. Hot Shot’s Secret’s Diesel Winter Rescue is an emergency fuel treatment that re-liquefies gelled fuel and de-ices frozen fuel filters to restore power and the flow of fuel to the engine. According to the company, it is suitable for all diesel blends and is safe for all diesel vehicles. Diesel Winter Rescue contains a military-grade de-icer and moisture dispersant that works quickly to de-gel a vehicle’s fuel tank, lines, and fuel pump; de-ice the vehicle’s fuel filter; and add much-needed lubricity for long-term wear protection.

Lucas Oil

Lucas Oil Anti-Gel Cold Weather Diesel Treatment helps drivers and fleet operators avoid costly winter-related downtime by preventing diesel fuel from gelling in temperatures as low as -40°F. By using advanced wax crystal modifiers, it ensures that fuel stays fluid, reducing the risk of cold filter plugging, which can otherwise cause engine stalls and costly repairs. According to the company, the added water dispersants also help by breaking down moisture, preventing ice buildup in fuel lines and filters, and further safeguarding engine components. It’s compatible with diesel particulate filters and will not void OEM warranties. A half gallon can treat up to 300 gallons of diesel, making it an effective and practical solution for maintaining fuel system performance and reducing the risk of winter-related engine issues during the coldest months.

Old World Industries

Old World Industries has invested in a new triple-filtration process for its Peak BlueDEF diesel exhaust fluid. PEAK BlueDEF and the PEAK BlueDEF Platinum will also debut new packaging in Q1 2025. According to the company, every batch of PEAK BlueDEF and PEAK BlueDEF Platinum is now triple-filtered, lab-tested, and secure-sealed to provide “ultimate protection from contaminants." PEAK BlueDEF and PEAK BlueDEF Platinum are compatible with all diesel SCR systems, and the non-flammable formula with easy-pour dispensing nozzle makes handling safe and easy. BlueDEF Platinum contains a proprietary additive package to help prevent deposit buildup, optimize fuel economy, and extend the life of the SCR system.

Renewable Lubricants

Renewable Lubricants’ Bio-Power winter diesel fuel conditioner is engineered to boost performance and support cold weather operation for diesel engines. It is said to improve fuel economy and power while keeping engines in “like new” condition to reduce maintenance costs and downtime. According to the company, results show a 10% increase in fuel economy, a reduction in black smoke of 42%, an increase in horsepower of 6%, enhanced injector cleanliness according to the Cummins L10 test, and enhanced corrosion protection according to the Cummins N14 corrosion/erosion test. The company claims that by reducing exhaust opacity, enhancing fuel lubricity, and preventing varnish and sludge formation, users gain smoother, more reliable operation and less downtime. For large fleets or a single vehicle, Bio-Power simplifies winter fuel management with cleaner, quieter engines; longer engine life; and lower operating costs. This fuel conditioner meets EPA standards for world-class "Premium Diesel" injector cleanliness, lubricity, and stability. Bio-Power winter diesel fuel conditioner also meets or exceeds ASTM standards for fuel stability, lubricity, corrosion protection, and water tolerance to provide necessary protection during harsh winter months. It is available in quart bottles, single gallons, 5-gallon pails, 55-gallon drums, 275 and 330-gallon totes, and bulk tankers. It can also be custom-ordered.

Rislone

Rislone DEF Crystal Clean Diesel DEF and SCR emissions system cleaner is a proprietary blend of cleaning agents and surfactant detergents designed to safely and effectively clean selective catalytic reduction systems in diesel vehicles of all sizes. Diesel vehicles that are regularly driven at low speeds, with light loads, for short durations, or that make frequent stops are especially prone to developing white crystal deposits in their SCR systems. According to the company, Rislone Crystal Clean improves diesel exhaust fluid and dissolves crystal deposits throughout the entire system, including the tank, pump, heater, sender, lines, injector, decomposition tube/reactor, and mixer. It clears P20EE and related codes, restores SCR function, and brings back engine power and performance. Rislone DEF Crystal Clean works with all UREA DEF/AdBlue fluids and will not void new vehicle warranties. It’s made in the USA.

Schaeffer's Specialized Lubricants

The Diesel Treat 2000 ultra-low sulfur winter fuel additive from Schaeffer’s Specialized Lubricants is formulated to provide ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel with maximum cold temperature protection against fuel gelling, waxing, and fuel line freeze-up. Diesel Treat 2000 contains a highly concentrated, multi-functional additive system for improving fuel economy, injector cleanliness, and fuel stability. According to the company, it protects against moisture in cold temperatures using advanced water dispersants and anti-wax settling agents. The company’s proprietary lubricity additive, SynShield, is blended into Diesel Treat 2000 to prevent fuel system wear and injector scoring. Diesel Treat 2000 can be used in all types of diesel fuel, including low-sulfur diesel fuel and biodiesel blends.
