9. The major electric axles for commercial vehicles

E-axles are a developing electric powertrain technology that places electric motors and associated gears directly at the axle.

E-axles can replace a centralized motor/engine, freeing significant space where an engine and driveshaft would otherwise remain. That new space can accommodate extra batteries for enhanced range. Only a handful of e-axles today are designed for medium- and heavy-duty commercial vehicles. Here are a few of the major e-axles around. Read more…

8. 70 years: A look back at the Chevy small-block V8 engine

This year, Chevrolet is celebrating the 70th anniversary of its small-block V8 truck engine. In late 1954, Chevrolet took the wraps off its 1955 line of Task Force pickup trucks, the first full redesign of Chevrolet pickups since 1947.

What made the V8 engine different was that the overhead-valve design optimized the flow of air and fuel into the combustion chamber, improving fuel efficiency and boosting horsepower. The engine became popular among everyday American car buyers and racers and hotrodders alike. This popularity prompted Chevy to create a larger, more powerful V8 engine variant for trucks and commercial vehicles, high-performance sport models, and large luxury cars. Over the past 70 years, approximately 100 million-plus small-block V8s were produced. Read more…

2. Trucking By the Numbers 2024

More than 1.1 million U.S. companies operated a fleet of at least five commercial vehicles in 2024, a reminder that transportation is one of the most important aspects of the U.S. economy. Volvo Trucks North America, for example, has nearly completely redesigned its flagship VNL long-haul tractor for 2025. The market leader, Freightliner, is rolling out the fifth generation of its flagship Cascadia truck in the second half of 2025. While others, such as Kenworth and Peterbilt, offer powertrains that meet California’s more stringent vehicle operations.
