The 2025 Ford Expedition joins a broad lineup of pursuit-rated and special service vehicles dating back to 1950. Look back at Ford law enforcement vehicles over the past 75 years.

Ford recently opened order books for the new 2025 Ford Expedition SSV, designed for law enforcement, fire departments, and other government agencies. The truck includes versatility, the latest technology, and the capability to tow, carry personnel, and haul gear.

“Duty is at the heart of everything our valued law enforcement customers do, and that’s a standard Expedition SSV is built to meet,” Lindsey Bertino, police brand marketing manager, said. “We’re very proud to add another all-new vehicle to our police lineup with incredible technology like the panoramic display that departments across the country are looking for.”

Versatility in the line of duty

Now in its second generation, Expedition SSV is available as a two-row configuration with cloth seating surfaces, vinyl floors, and an array of power points for all areas of the vehicle. Expedition Max SSV offers three rows of seating with a third row 60/40 powerfold to help accommodate personnel and equipment as required.

The new Ford Split Gate makes the 2025 Expedition SUV the only vehicle in its class with a split gate feature/tailgate. Officers can lift three-quarters of the liftgate for quick access or fold down the lower tailgate to use it as a stable platform capable of supporting up to 500 lb.

A standard 24-inch panoramic display replaces the traditional gauge cluster, placing information at the operator's eye level. Expedition SSV also includes dark car mode, which shuts off all interior lighting to help occupants remain discrete during stakeouts, and police accessory independent timed-release output, which helps prevent unauthorized access to cargo.

The Expedition SSV powertrain is standard with a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, 400 hp and 480 lb.-ft. of torque backed by a 4x4 driveline, a new two-speed transfer case with touch-on-demand, and auto all-wheel drive. Expedition SSV has a 9,600-lb. max towing capacity with a load-leveling bar includes pro trailer hitch assist and pro trailer backup assist, BLIS with cross-traffic alert, and BLIS with trailer coverage to help with hitching, backing, and situational awareness for marine or mounted units and other municipal uses.

75 years of service

The 2025 Expedition joins a broad lineup of pursuit-rated and special service vehicles dating back to 1950, beginning with the police package, which applied to the Ford Custom and gained the iconic flathead V8 in 1951. An expansive portfolio of products has been offered over the decades, including the Bronco Special Purpose, several generations of the legendary Crown Victoria, Mustang Patrol, Police Interceptor Sedan, and Police Interceptor Utility Hybrid AWD, which is the only pursuit-rated hybrid police utility vehicle. Ford was also instrumental in advancing safety standards for police vehicles in the early 2000s, implementing extreme 75 mph rear crash crumple zones and developing ballistic panels to line doors.

Police have relied on Ford for its police vehicles for years to perform front-line duties effectively. The new 2025 Ford Police Interceptor Utility recently went on sale with its in-demand hybrid drivetrain. Ford F-150 Police Responder, the first pursuit-rated pickup, offers a combination of capability and utility. In 2023, the F-150 Lightning Pro SSV was the first purpose-built law-enforcement electric pickup. Transit Prisoner Transport Vehicle is designed for exactly the task it was named and includes upfit equipment needed to do the job. Mustang Mach-E has passed testing with the Michigan State Police and LA Sheriff’s Department and is now in pilot programs with agencies nationwide.

“We are committed to designing products that are durable, safe, purpose-built for law enforcement, upfit friendly, and deliver the performance our customers expect from Built Ford Tough vehicles. That’s what we call our police brand DNA,” said Bertino said. “For 75 years, we’ve been working with law enforcement. We are grateful to all of the agencies, officers, and Ford employees that have helped design and build America’s best-selling lineup of police vehicles.”

The 2025 Ford Expedition SSV is assembled at Ford's Kentucky Truck Plant, and order banks are now open.
