Major traffic delays and road closures in Charlotte during DNC

Sept. 4, 2012

Drivers should anticipate major delays due to road closures and parking restrictions near the Time Warner Cable Arena and the Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, NC, during the Democratic National Convention this week. Closures began on Sept. 2 and will end on Sept. 7 at 5 a.m.

According to the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation, roads that may experience the greatest congestion are I-77, I-85, I-485, US-74, and NC-27. Additionally, I-277 will be closed between I-77 and Independence Blvd. starting at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 6 until 2 a.m. Sept. 7.

Trucks are advised to avoid I-77 in southern half of Mecklenburg by using I-485 to access either I-77 or I-85.

Anyone not attending the DNC should avoid traveling through the Charlotte area, NCDOT said. Those who need to travel in the area should expect travel delays as well as road closures in and around event venues. Drivers should stay alert and follow all posted signs and instruction from law enforcement officers, NCDOT said.
