Moving Military Trucks Via Ribbon Bridge

June 20, 2016
Floating bridges is how Army trucks cross rivers

Trucks are the logistical workhorses helping to keep U.S. Army units fully supplied in the field. But trucks can't walk on water, so when they need to cross rivers, lakes, and such, that's when an Improved Ribbon Bridge (IRB) is deployed; a section pontoon-based construction that can either completely span a body of water like a regular bridge or be turned into a makeshift ferry of sorts. Soldiers of the 200th Engineer Multi-Role Bridge Company with the South Dakota Army National Guard recently showed off how an IRB can move big trucks during Golden Coyote, an annual training exercise carried out this month in the Black Hills region of South Dakota and Wyoming.
