Port of Oakland, BNSF make intermodal deal

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) and the Port of Oakland, CA, have made a deal whereby BNSF will operate the Port's new Joint Intermodal Terminal, which will be called the Oakland International Gateway. Ft. Worth, TX-based BNSF said the deal will allow it to provide service to other parties at the Port's intermodal facility and expects to transfer more than 20,000 truckloads

The Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway Company (BNSF) and the Port of Oakland, CA, have made a deal whereby BNSF will operate the Port's new Joint Intermodal Terminal, which will be called the Oakland International Gateway.

Ft. Worth, TX-based BNSF said the deal will allow it to provide service to other parties at the Port's intermodal facility and expects to transfer more than 20,000 truckloads of freight to intermodal service in the Oakland area. Scheduled to open later this month, the 85-acre Oakland intermodal terminal will initially be able the handle 250,000 containers per year.

The facility also features 13,300 feet of loading and unloading track that can accommodate 410 40-foot containers at a time, along with an additional 10,100 feet of storage and support tracks and parking for 1,245 containers. Total construction cost for the facility is $38 million, with $22.1 million coming from federal grants.
