Tweet confirms Mercedes-Benz mid-sized Vito van coming to US

July 29, 2014
A Tweet to Fleet Owner from Daimler Truck and Bus says the new mid-sized Vito commercial van will be coming to the North American market.

Unveiled in Germany earlier this week, an all-new Vito mid-sized commercial van will be coming to North America, according to what appears to be a direct message from Daimler Truck and Bus.  Responding to a Tweet from Fleet Owner asking if the Vito might be headed to the U.S.,  @Daimler_CV (Daimler Truck & Bus) replied: “yes we are bringing the #mbvito to North America. Stay tuned for more!!”

The 2015 Vito introduced in Europe on Monday would join the larger Sprinter as Mercedes-Benz USA (MBUSA) moves to expand its light commercial vehicle offerings under a newly created Vans USA Division.  With the Sprinter ranging from 10,000 to over 11,000 lbs. GVW, the new Vito’s GVW ratings range from 5,000 to 6,500 lbs.   The smaller van would give MBUSA a competitor for the Ford Transit Connect, GMC/Chevrolet City Express, Nissan NV200 and the recently announced Ram ProMaster City.

Unique in its class, the new Vito will be offered with three powertrain options – rear-wheel, all-wheel and front-wheel drive – when the European version goes on sale in October.  Depending on the powertrain, it will be available with either a 1.6-liter or 2.15-liter diesel with a choice of ratings ranging from 88 to 190 hp.  No word yet on powertrain or engine options for North America.

The European model is also being introduced with a number of advances safety systems as standard equipment, including MB’s Crosswind Assist system that automatically compensates for strong wind gusts. Safety-related options will include active parking assist, collision prevention braking,  and blind spot assist.
