Derrick Harris, a driver for Schneider National Carriers, was named Goodyear North America Highway hero for 2003 at the Mid-American Trucking Show. Harris received a $10,000 savings bond from Goodyear.
Last November, Harris saved the life of a person who had been set on fire and helped police find the person responsible for the crime. Harris, who is from Hopewell, VA, had just left Richmond and was headed to Knoxville, TN, when he noticed a fire on the side of the road and realized it was a person. After stopping and securing his truck, he wrapped the victim in a blanket and doused it with water. He then called for emergency assistance and used a fire extinguisher to put out a fire that hard started in some nearby trees.
The three other finalists for the award were: David Dunham, Fitchburg, MA, who was driving for Ronnie Dowdy Inc. and now drives for U.S. Express; Joe Sines, Horse Shoe Run, WV, Schneider National; and Anne Spriggs, Williow Springs, MO, CRST Van Ex.
