DEF prices stay steady

Feb. 7, 2013

Retail pump pricing for diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) stayed relatively steady in the U.S. and Canada between December and January, according to data tracked by Integer Research, with bulk “tote” pricing for the liquid declining slightly.

Integer reported via its DEF Tracker service that the national U.S. pump price for DEF remained level at $2.79 per gallon between December and January, noting that some 898 truck stops now offer bulk DEF at the pump across the country.

Meanwhile, the national average pump price for DEF in Canada remained at 80 Canadian cents per gallon, which equates to $3.01 per gallon in the U.S., with 13 Canadian truck stops offering DEF at the pump, according to the firm’s information.

Chris Goodfellow, emissions analyst at Integer, told Fleet Owner that using totes or permanent storage to take deliveries of DEF normally provides fleets with a substantial savings versus buying DEF at truck stops – noting that tote refill deliveries made in January recorded a five cent drop compared to December last year across the 10 U.S. pricing hubs monitored by the firm.

“Distributors have invested in an extensive logistics network to handle these [tote] deliveries and the level of competition, combined with falling raw material costs, caused a downward movement in bulk prices between December 2012 and January 2013,” Goodfellow pointed out.

“While there is an element of localized competition between truck stops offering bulk DEF, there has been little change in the pricing of the different truck stop brands over the last few months,” he added.

Integer also announced that it will be offering free webinars in March on effective DEF purchasingstrategies. For more information, email [email protected] using the subject line “DEF Tracker webinar.”
