It’s that time of year again …

Fleet managers and drivers should begin preparing for the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance's (CVSA) 29th annual International Roadcheck, which will take place June 7-9, 2016. And this year, there’s an emphasis on tire safety.

Tire safety practices include:

  • Measuring the tire tread depth
  • Checking tire pressure
  • Checking to make sure no items are lodged between dual tires
  • Examining the overall condition of the tire to ensure no deep cuts or bulges exist in the sidewalls of the tire

Though there is an emphasis on tire safety this year, it's not all inspectors will be looking for.

Last year, Fleet Owner spoke with Andy Blair, a municipal police officer for 26 years who received DOT training through the Pennsylvania State Police. He inspected trucks for his last 11 years on the force. Blair is DOT-certified in cargo, tank and hazmat, and he also was a weighmaster. Now retired from law enforcement, he operates DOT Checkups, a York, Pennsylvania company that fleets hire to inspect their trucks before they hit the road. He conducts 300 to 400 inspections of all levels every year.

These five slides depict what he wants drivers and managers to know about roadside inspections.
