Dreyer’s Grand Ice Cream Holdings Inc will close its City of Commerce CA manufacturing plant at the end of April 2006 and shift production to Bakersfield CA. The move results from the 2005 completion of a $100 million expansion of its Bakersfield ice cream manufacturing facility.

The City of Commerce closure will impact 99 employees, but Dreyer’s hopes to offer jobs to most of those workers.

Oakland CA-based Dreyer’s has two plants—one in Fort Wayne IN and another plant under expansion in Laurel MD—that handle East Coast production. The Laurel plant, when completed in 2006, will be one of the largest ice cream plants in the world, rivaling the Bakersfield plant.

With the expansion in Bakersfield, Dreyer’s has hired another 381 employees there in 2005, bringing its Bakersfield employee total to nearly 800.

Dreyer’s and its subsidiaries produce and distribute ice cream and frozen dessert products including Dibs, Grand, Slow Churned Light, Haagen-Dazs, Nestle Drumstick and Crunch, Butterfinger, Toll House, Carnation, Push-Up, Dole, Fruit Bars, Starbucks, and The Skinny Cow.
