Ryder System Inc, provider of transportation and supply chain management systems, has decided to equip 5,500 dedicated contract carriage (DCC) trucks and tractors with PrePass, letting its drivers bypass weigh stations.
PrePass, a coast-to-coast, electronic pre-clearance weigh station bypass system, enables qualified fleet operators to comply electronically with state weight, safety, and credential requirements while traveling at highway speeds.
Only fleet operators with proven safety records qualify to participate in PrePass, and participation is voluntary. As qualified trucks approach a PrePass-equipped inspection facility, an in-cab transponder identifies the vehicle to a computer, which certifies compliance with state safety and credential requirements. Vehicles in compliance receive a green light on the in-cab transponder instructing them to bypass the inspection facility without ever slowing down.
Launched in California in 1995, PrePass is operational at 232 locations with more coming soon. To date, 24 states have deployed PrePass: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Mexico, Nebraska, Nevada, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.
