ICS: Cold space tightens post-pandemic
Labor shortages have contributed to a tightening cold storage market as food manufacturers look to return inventory levels and fill rates to pre-pandemic levels, according to a new report from Interstate Cold Storage.
The recently released report, “Impacts of the Pandemic from a 3PL Cold Storage Company’s Vantage Point,” was written by Charles Betts, sales manager for the family-owned frozen warehousing company headquartered in Indiana. The first-hand account of the pandemic’s impact on the cold chain industry covers current cold storage availability, ongoing driver and labor shortages, and shifting safety protocols.
Betts also provides a forecast predicting the ongoing impact the cold storage industry can expect in the remainder of 2022 and into the future.
According to the report, manufacturing companies are producing frozen products at pre-pandemic levels even as cold storage availability has reduced. There are also challenges due to a lack of drivers, in addition to a shortage of manufacturing and warehousing personnel, leading to increased prices for temporary solutions.
The industry report is broken down into three categories: exploring economic conditions, labor shortages, and safety changes in the 3PL cold storage industry.
