Savi Networks recently recorded the 25,000th commercial cargo shipment tagged with standards-based electronic seals (e-seals) moving through its global wireless network, which is set up at port facilities handling 20 percent of world trade. The SaviTrak information service monitors in real-time the location and security status of commercial cargo shipments.

The United States Department of Homeland Security’s plan to mandate mechanical seals on all containers coming into the United States after Oct. 15, 2008, is an important step on the path to safer ports and borders. This mandate also will help generate more interest in deployment of e-seals to help automate security verification processes.

In all 25,000-plus shipments, e-seals were used on shipments monitored by SaviTrak, a software service that captures data automatically from all types of wireless devices attached to shipments moving through Savi Networks’ infrastructure. Further, Savi Networks is working closely with several international Customs organizations on global container pilot projects using e-seals based on the ISO 18185 standard to evaluate their effectiveness for faster green lane clearances.

Savi Networks already has deployed data capture infrastructure in facilities at the U.S. ports of Los Angeles/Long Beach CA, Oakland CA, Savannah GA, and Norfolk VA; the Chinese ports of Hong Kong, Yantian, Shekou, Shatian, Chiwan, and Mawan; the Korean ports of Busan and Kwangyang; the European ports of Rotterdam (Netherlands) and Felixstowe (United Kingdom); and the ports in Kaohsiung, Taiwan; and Laem Chabang, Thailand.
