GPS fleet tracking systems typically provide trucking companies with a lot more information than just vehicle locations. Even the most basic commercial tracking service will provide vehicle speeds, engine status, stop and start times, and other metrics that impact day-to-day business operations.

Unfortunately, most companies don't take advantage of this information because they don't know how to apply it to the most important functions of their business.

“When looking for a GPS tracking service partner, companies should look for one that has the tools and expertise to help them ‘move beyond the map’ and start integrating location-based data into their own applications,” says Ryan Crandell, director of business development for Navtrak, a leading provider of GPS tracking services for organizations with mobile workforces.

For companies looking to use GPS technology to improve operational efficiencies, he offered some practical questions to ask of any potential provider of these services:

  • Can we integrate your data into existing systems?

  • Can we access your data in raw form, for our own people to work with?

  • Is your GPS data secure?

It is always best to consult with experienced and dedicated GPS integration specialists, said Crandell, and be sure to ask for references of other organizations that are successfully using the provider's data for various business applications.

“The bottom line is that it's not enough for GPS tracking companies to talk about integration. They need to be able to demonstrate it, provide relevant references, and offer professional expertise that takes an interest in the way your organization functions.”
