Surface trade with Canada and Mexico up from 2007

Trade using surface transportation between the United States and its North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) partners Canada and Mexico was 6.8% higher this past May compared with May 2007, reaching $74.1 billion, reported the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS).

Surface transportation consists largely of freight movements by truck, rail, and pipeline.

About 88% of U.S. trade by value with Canada and Mexico moves on land.

U.S.-Canada surface transportation trade totaled $48.9 billion in May, up 10.5% over May 2007. The top 10 trading states with Canada, ranked by May 2008 surface trade value, were: Michigan, Illinois, New York, California, Ohio, Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington, Minnesota, and Indiana.

U.S.-Mexico surface transportation trade totaled $25.2 billion, up 0.2%. The top 10 states trading with Mexico, in order, were: Texas, California, Michigan, Arizona, Illinois, Ohio, Tennessee, North Carolina, New York, and Pennsylvania.
