At Truck World 2010, Great Dane Trailers showcased its products to extend the useful life of a refrigerated trailer and combat corrosion. ThermoGuard—a glass-reinforced thermoplastic interior liner—and CorroGuard—a corrosion-fighting system— were both featured on a 53-foot Great Dane Super Seal reefer at the show.
Noted for its light weight, structural integrity, and consistently high resale value, the Super Seal incorporates a number of standard features and a variety of options. For example, the Super Seal’s roof construction utilizes a patented corrugation process that maximizes its thermal properties, while minimizing the potential for delamination. Stainless steel rear doors, which provide corrosion resistance and an overall enhanced appearance, are completely sealed using a gasket design for protection against moisture intrusion. In addition, its standard all-LED exterior lighting package offers energy efficiency, and the Long Life Light System—a maintenance-free, fully modular wiring harness—is completely sealed to fight corrosion.
Multiple features help protect cargo, including a 10-inch high tapered extruded aluminum scuffband to boost sidewall strength where damage most occurs. Landing gear and mount location gives loads additional support, stability, and strength, and an air-ride suspension further safeguards cargo and reduces driver fatigue.
The computer-controlled foaming injection process for the Super Seal’s roof and sidewalls, which takes place within a temperature-regulated press, ensures flat linings and skins with void-free foam for maximum thermal efficiency. This can be further enhanced by the ThermoGuard interior lining, a patented multi-layer thermoplastic liner.
Testing has proven that ThermoGuard maximizes the useful life of the trailer by reducing the thermal degradation that occurs with conventional reefer linings. Some of the first production line ThermoGuard-equipped reefers indicated after nearly five years of service, a loss of thermal efficiency comparable to just one year. Earlier evaluations after six, eight, and 20 months of service revealed an almost insignificant reduction in thermal effectiveness.
CorroGuard with Technology by GatorHyde, Great Dane’s spray-in-place thermoplastic elastomeric coating applied to suspensions and landing gear, provides long-term protection from road abrasion and corrosion. It allows complete coverage of trailer subframes and landing gears.
