Apple growers pick Purfresh systems

Leading growers in the Pacific Northwest have implemented Purfresh Cold Storage and Purfresh Wash systems to reduce decay, control ripening, and enhance food safety of apples.

The success these growers—Auvil Fruit Company, Cowiche Growers, and Gebbers Farms—have experienced using these intelligent atmosphere and disinfectant systems demonstrates how Purfresh’s ozone technologies maintain quality and improve shelf life.

“Equipping our storage facilities with the Purfresh Cold Storage system and integrated Intellipur software analytics gives us peace of mind and allows us to focus more on critical business issues rather than having to constantly check on the conditions of our refrigerated storage rooms,” said Richard Thomason of Gebbers Farms. “Installing the Purfresh technologies has been instrumental to delivering high-quality apples to our customers, and as a result of the success we’ve experienced, we recently added additional Purfresh systems to our operations.”

Engineered for refrigerated storage environments, the Purfresh Cold Storage technology ensures food safety and quality by combining a scalable, plug-and-play ozone-based system with Purfresh Intellipur online analytics—an information service that includes environmental sensing, web-based monitoring, alerting, data reporting, and analysis along with remote control and diagnostics. Purfresh Wash provides a safe and effective produce disinfection system, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals.

Earlier in 2010, Purfresh announced research results that demonstrated controlled supplementation of ozone in cold storage conditions could kill and control the spread of foodborne pathogens such as Salmonella by more than 99.997%, Listeria monocytogenes by more than 99.999%, and E coli O157:H7 by as much as 99.9%. Details of this research are available on the Purfresh website.
