PowerLINE gen-set EES option receives verification

An optional new engine emissions system (EES) for Carrier Transicold’s latest PowerLINE generator sets received full verification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as a level 3+ verified diesel emission control (VDEC) device.
An optional new engine emissions system (EES) for Carrier Transicold’s latest PowerLINE generator sets received full verification from the California Air Resources Board (CARB) as a level 3+ verified diesel emission control (VDEC) device. “Full verification validates the EES as an evergreen compliance solution for CARB’s particulate emissions standard for transport refrigeration units (TRUs) and TRU generator sets used in California,” said Michael Dormer, general manager, Global Container Services, Carrier Transicold.

As an option for California applications, the system can be specified for PowerLINE generator sets concurrent with sale or lease. However, it is specifically designed for easy installation at a later time for users who require extended CARB compliance. CARB’s full verification of the EES is a milestone in Carrier Transicold’s rollout of its latest generator sets, providing shipping lines and leasing companies with technology options and compliance choices that best suit their operations. In November 2013, CARB granted conditional verification to the EES, allowing its installation on PowerLINE generator sets with up to 3,000 hours of engine operation. Achieving full verification removes the 3,000-hour condition, permitting EES installation regardless of accrued hours of operation. The EES is an original equipment manufacturer-developed CARB level 3+ VDEC device for generator sets. A level 3+ VDEC device reduces particulate emissions in accordance with CARB’s ultra-low emissions requirement for transport refrigeration units, also known as ULETRU, while also reducing nitrogen oxides. This device was engineered for the PowerLINE clip-on and undermount TRU generator sets, which provide uninterrupted power to operate 460-volt ISO container refrigeration systems when hauled over land in intermodal operations. These TRU generator sets are certified to the US Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) 2013 Tier 4 standard for engines rated under 25 horsepower, allowing use indefinitely throughout North America and for up to seven years in California without restriction. In California, CARB requires that a VDEC strategy be applied to units in this class when used for more than seven years, which is provided by the EES option. Installed in place of the standard exhaust system, the EES filters exhaust using a high-performance diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and a catalytic diesel particulate filter (CDPF). The DOC removes more than 93% of hydrocarbons and the CDPF eliminates more than 98% of particulate matter, well beyond the 85% ULETRU requirement. Carrier Transicold’s EES uses a combination of passive, active, and active-assist regeneration to clear accumulated soot. No operator intervention is needed. Carrier Transicold’s PowerLINE generator sets for Tier 4 compliance incorporate ecoFORWARD technologies, resulting in a platform that can reduce fuel usage by approximately one-third compared with prior standard units, which were designed for compliance with the EPA’s 2008 Tier 4 interim, or Tier 4i, standard. Those models are still available worldwide, with or without a FuelWise fuel-saving option, for use in markets where the Tier 4i standard meets or exceeds local emissions requirements.
