A Safety National Awards Safety First grant of $5,000 has been awarded to Smithfield Foods (dba Armour-Eckrich Meats LLC) for implementing an interlocking handrail system on liftgate platforms to eliminate injuries due to falls off the back of DSD (direct store delivery) route trucks.
The interlocking handrail system was one of many safety enhancements driven by Jim Michael, Armour-Eckrich Meats operations manager; and a collaboration between Armour-Eckrich Meats, chassis suppliers Freightliner and International, body supplier Hercules Mfg Co, and gate supplier Maxon Lift Corp, on the most recent rollout of DSD route delivery trucks for Armour-Eckrich Meats.
Headquartered in Lisle IL, Armour-Eckrich Meats is engaged in processing and marketing meat products for foodservice operators and consumers in the United States. The company offers lunchmeats, franks, smoked sausages, bacon, pepperoni, turkey breast, ham, roast beef, beef franks and meatballs; as well as refrigerated breakfast products.
