Thermo King to help decarbonize the cold chain

Dec. 5, 2023
The company’s trailer and large truck products will feature TracKing hardware and two-year service subscriptions as standard features that support sustainability beginning in 2024.

TracKing telematics will help reefer fleets decarbonize the cold chain in 2024, when Thermo King’s advanced telematics hardware and two-year service subscription will come standard on auxiliary power units (APUs), and trailer and large truck products sold in the U.S. and Canada, according to the manufacturer.

Thermo King launched TracKing Pro telematics in September.

“As the world contends with the impact of climate change, Thermo King continuously draws on our rich history of industry leadership to develop the next generation of technology,” Karin de Bondt, Thermo King Americas president, said in a news release. “By leveraging data and insights that respond and react to customer needs quickly, our solutions smooth the path to decarbonization without sacrificing performance.”

With the cold chain industry’s first predictive analytics solution, Thermo King aims to make it easier for customers to meet sustainability and operational goals by reducing fuel consumption, increasing uptime, and boosting fleet profitability, the company said. TracKing Pro offers fleets “the potential” to eliminate up to 60,000 metric tons of carbon emissions per year—the equivalent of parking over 100,000 passenger vehicles—by harnessing the power of “cutting-edge” algorithms to estimate fuel consumption and electricity usage.

The solution also includes a benchmark analytics dashboard that allows customers to compare fleet energy usage and operations against best-in-class fleets.

Thermo King’s third-generation APU is the first in the refrigerated transportation industry to include telematics, the company added. TracKing telematics hardware already is standard in Thermo King’s newest domestic rail container unit, the Advancer S-DRC, and on the Heat King 450 series, the highest-capacity transport heater available today.

TracKing hardware will be sold through more than 185 dealer locations in North America.
