FedEx Express scored the first touchdown of Super Bowl LIV with the delivery of the Vince Lombardi Trophy to Miami ahead of the Feb. 2 game between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers.

Lazaro Valle, a FedEx Express courier for 25 years, made the final delivery to the Super Bowl Experience with the help of Anquan Boldin, a 14-year NFL veteran and Super Bowl champion.

“Today marks the 20th consecutive year FedEx has safely delivered the iconic Vince Lombardi Trophy, one of the most recognizable trophies in all of sports, to the Super Bowl host city,” Patrick Fitzgerald, senior vice president of communications, said in a Jan. 25 statement.

The trophy was monitored during the trip from NFL Headquarters in New York to the Miami Beach Convention Center by SenseAware, a FedEx device that can track environmental factors such as temperature and humidity. It also monitors light detection, which would indicate if the package was opened before its arrival.

The historic trophy, handcrafted by Tiffany & Co., is made of sterling silver and depicts a regulation-size football in kicking position on a pyramid-like base that includes the words “Vince Lombardi Trophy” and “Super Bowl LIV.”

FedEx Corp. is the official delivery service sponsor of the NFL. It sponsors the FedEx Air & Ground NFL Players of the Week and Players of the Year Awards.

During each week of the regular season, FedEx donates $2,000 through FedEx Cares to the USO in the winning players’ names, totaling $4,000. These donations support USO Pathfinder, which assists service members and military spouses in their transition back to civilian life.

The Player of the Year winners will be named before the Super Bowl, and come with an additional $20,000 donation.
