Rich Freeland, president of the Cummins engine business unit, said the OEM is launching what it calls a "clean sheet" 12-liter truck engine for the Chinese market dubbed the ISG. The "G" in Chinese stands for "Revolution" he noted.
Freeland added that the next "battleground" in the truck engine business will center around improving fuel economy.
Dave Crompton. VP-Cummins engine business, noted that the OEM is looking to expand the reach of its 5-liter small diesel into what he called the "lower end" of the medium-duty market.
Crompton also noted that the OEM has invested $2 billion over the last three years in truck engine R&D despite it being a "flat" market. He added that Cummins has boosted its engine-making capacity from 1 million to 1.5 million units.
Jennifer Rumsey, VP-engineering for the Cummins engine business unit, said the company's R&D focus is now on subsystems and powertrain integration efforts in order to boost fuel economy,
While waste heat recovery systems offer a chance to boost fuel economy by 5%, Rumsey said Cummins is holding off for now on efforts to commercially produce them.
Jeff Jones, VP for Cummins North American engine business, said design changes to the company's truck engine products have made them 7% more fuel efficient compared to models built just 4 years ago.
Jones stressed that 7% improvement in fuel efficiency gets another 3% to 6% boost when its integrated powertrain package -- designed in partnership with Eaton -- gets added to the mix.
Ahead of the opening of the 2014 Mid America Trucking Show, Cummins Inc. held a press conference to highlight some of its new ndeavors and products, as well as provide the company's perspective on trends that will affect the trucking industry.
