Mack Trucks previewed its new Mack LR series of low-entry cabover refuse trucks at the WasteExpo show in Atlanta today. The OEM said the LR was “designed with the driver, customer and demands of the rigorous job in mind.”

Mack said the new cabover will become available in 2015 and that it will initially be offered in three-axle 6x4 configurations, powered either by diesel or natural gas.

The LR model will come standard with a Mack MP7 11-liter diesel engine with ratings of 325 to 345 horsepower and torque ratings from 1,200 to 1,280 lb.-ft.

The Cummins Westport ISL G natural gas engine will be optional. All LR models are will be equipped with an Allison RDS five-speed or six-speed automatic transmission.

The truck will be available with left-hand drive, right-hand drive, dual-drive and left-hand drive/right-hand stand-up drive configurations.

“The Mack LR series showcases what Mack does best– building rugged, robust trucks to the exact specifications of the application and the customer,” said Stephen Roy, president, Mack Trucks North American Sales and Marketing.

“The new cab will be configured to improve driver comfort and productivity,” he continued, “while also maintaining the excellent maneuverability identified with Mack refuse models.”

Mack said the LR was “designed with body builders in mind,” as it will offer additional access points and mounting locations for wiring, controls, and joysticks.

The OEM said the new model’s cab will provide an “enhanced driver environment,” including tilt/telescopic steering, power windows and door locks, memory mirrors, in-dash air-conditioning, standard in-cab LED lighting and an instrument cluster with color LCD display as well as steering column-mounted main gauge pods for both the right-hand and left-hand driving positions to enhance driver visibility and improve ergonomics.

“Refuse vehicle customers and their drivers want a comfortable, safe work environment, great visibility and controls where they need them,” noted Curtis Dorwart, refuse product marketing manager. “All of these elements were taken into consideration and incorporated into the design of the new Mack LR series.”
