Diesel engine maker Cummins Inc. andInternational Corp. are extending their engine supply agreement for Class 8 on-highway diesel engines through 2013, a deal that provides for the ongoing supply of Cummins ISL, ISM and ISX engines for use in International brand Class 8 trucks.

As part of the long-term agreement, beginning in 2010, Cummins will be Navistar's exclusive supplier for 15L and 16L big bore diesel engines (Cummins ISX) for all of Navistar's Class 8 trucks in North America. Cummins is pursuing a technology path similar to what Navistar is following for its diesel engines for 2010, using a high pressure common rail fuel system combined with next-generation cooled EGR, advanced electronic controls, air handling improvements, plus a diesel particulate filter.
Cummins noted that its next-generation EGR technology will not add complexity to the vehicle, while power, torque, fuel economy and maintenance intervals will remain the same as today's engine models.
