Peterbilt Motors Co. has rolled out four new hybrid test vehicles for during the Hybrid Truck Users Forum (HTUF) being today and tomorrow at the Qwest Field Event Center in Seattle. Kenworth Truck Co. and Mack Trucks are among other truck makers showcasing vehicles at the forum, which will also include displays by ArvinMeritor, Inc. and other component manufacturers.

"As customers face higher fuel costs and growing environmental concerns such as emission reductions, Peterbilt is proud to be at the forefront of advanced hybrid vehicle development by offering green solutions for both the medium- and heavy-duty markets," said Bill Jackson, Peterbilt General Manager and PACCAR Vice President.

There will be two versions of the medium-duty Model 335 showcased – one for utility applications and the other for P&D use. Both feature a PACCAR PX-6 engine, with 260 horsepower and 560 ft-lbs torque, and an Eaton Corp. hybrid electric drive system to increase horsepower to 300 and torque to 860 ft-lbs when engaged. The utility truck also features a Terex TC-55 Hi-Ranger Body and regenerates lithium-ion batteries to electrically operate the PTO, significantly improving fuel efficiency.

"Our medium duty hybrid vehicles currently in operation throughout North America are performing extremely well, with customers reporting a significant savings in fuel economy of up to 40 percent," said Jackson.

Peterbilt will also be featuring two heavy-duty hybrid models at the HTUF. The company has recently partnered with Walmart and Eaton to develop the Model 386 Heavy-Duty Hybrid, which is expected to show a 5 to 7% improvement in fuel efficiency and a 90% reduction in idling during rest periods. Peterbilt’s second heavy-duty test vehicle, the Model 320 Hydraulic Hybrid Refuse Truck, combines a 330 HP Cummins ISM engine with Eaton’s hydraulic launch assist (HLA) system. The company reports the system reduces brake wear by 50% and emissions by 40%, with up to a 30% improvement in fuel economy.

ArvinMeritor will be presenting information on their development of dual-mode diesel-electric drivetrains at the HTUF. “We’re engineering practical alternative-power solutions for Class 8 trucks that reduce energy consumption, emissions, and greenhouse gasses,” said Dennis Kramer, Hybrid Program Manager for ArvinMeritor.
