Shell releases Rotella T synthetic

Shell Lubricants has released the Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 heavy-duty motor oil, which it said meets or exceeds API CJ-4 specifications and offers improvements in wear protection, soot control, deposit control, heat resistance, fuel economy and protection in extreme climates.

“In seven out of seven standard engine tests that measure wear, compared to the previous formulation, Shell Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 has demonstrated an average of 34% improvement in wear (ranging from 2% to 90%), with substantially improved protection against cylinder liner wear,” said Walt Silveira, North American technical manager for Shell Lubricants.  “This is a significant benefit when a truck is used for low-speed operations, such as hauling heavy loads.”

According to the company, the 5W-40 synthetic protects against oil thickening caused by soot and other contaminants, keeping motor oil flowing for startup and under all operating conditions and providing up to 36% soot control improvement at typical motor oil soot levels.

The 5W-40 synthetic is compatible with exhaust aftertreatment devices such as diesel particulate filters (DPF) on heavy-duty trucks built after January 2007 as well as heavy-duty diesel engines built before 2007, the company said.

According to Shell, Rotella T Synthetic 5W-40 features a 70% improvement in oxidation protection and allows for reliable pumping on start-up at temperatures as low as –30F. It is available in bulk, drum, gallon, and quart package.
