Sweden’s AB Volvo has announced it has received 12.8 million Swedish Krona—approximately $2.2 million--towards field testing of its third-generation DME technology for heavy vehicles by the Swedish Energy Agency. The first trucks should be placed into service by the end of 2009, Volvo said.

According to Volvo, the tests are part of a project demonstrating the entire technology chain, from biomass to fuel through DME distribution and tanking stations. Chemrec, Delphi, ETC, Haldor Topsoe, Preem and Total are also participating in the project as partners.

The Swedish Energy Agency granted AB Volvo 62 million Swedish Krona, or about $10.6 million, in June 2006 for the development of the technology that will be tested in the field trials.
