Trojan Battery Co. today announced it will partner with Diamond Power Systems to power Diamond’s new battery-operated electric heater and air conditioner systems for sleeper cabs. The 15,000-BTU heating and a/c system and the 10,000-BTU A/C system will be powered by Trojan OverDriv AGM 31 deep-cycle batteries

Trojan Battery Co. today announced it will partner with Diamond Power Systems to power Diamond’s new battery-operated electric heater and air conditioner systems for sleeper cabs. The 15,000-BTU heating and a/c system and the 10,000-BTU A/C system will be powered by Trojan OverDriv AGM 31 deep-cycle batteries.

State and local legislations limiting truck idling have stimulated the need for idle reduction technologies that address driver comfort during periods of rest, pointed out Trojan. And according to the company, battery-powered “ engine-off” heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are quickly becoming the preferred technology because they are less expensive to own and operate.

But, said Trojan, “to effectively power these systems, a battery with deep cycling capabilities is required. Traditional starting or dual-purpose batteries are not built to handle the harsh deep discharge, recharge and power requirements of HVAC electrical systems, having been designed to provide maximum cranking power or only light to medium cycling performance for short durations.” When used in heavy-duty cycling applications, the company noted, the cycle life and performance of starting or dual-purpose batteries will significantly degrade in a shorter amount of time.

“We are pleased that Diamond Power Systems has joined Trojan’s global alliance of OEM partners,” said Elke Hirschman, vp of marketing for Trojan. “Working together with Diamond Power’s battery-operated electric heating and A/C systems the Trojan OverDrive AGM 31 battery will provide extended hours of comfortable sleeper cab environment for the resting driver.”

“We selected Trojan’s OverDrive AGM 31 battery because just like Diamond Power, Trojan Battery continually addresses the demands of the marketplace while providing the best quality products, performance and services possible,” said Dwayne Schwarze, Diamond’s national sales manager.

Trojan said its OverDrive AGM 31 battery is a sealed deep-cycle, absorbed glass mat (AGM) battery specifically engineered for powering no-idle HVAC systems over long periods of time. The battery’s heavy- duty cycling and deep-discharge characteristics allow it to provide a steady current in excess of 10 hours, effectively maintaining power to the auxiliary air conditioning system, noted Trojan. The OverDrive AGM 31 comes with a 30-month warranty and is supported nationally through Trojan’s master distributor network.
