Home-improvement retailer Lowe's Companies plans to build a new $16-million flatbed distribution center in the Port of Stockton, CA, to handle both trucking and rail shipments.

The company said it would retrofit two existing 120,000 sq.-ft. buildings located on Luce Avenue in the Port of Stockton for supplying products to more than 40 Lowe’s retail stores in northern California, Nevada and Oregon.

“Our flatbed distribution centers play a vital role in the state-of-the-art distribution network that keep our stores supplied with the products our customers need,” said Mike Mabry, executive vp-logistics and distribution, for Mooresville, NC-based Lowes. “The flatbed center will receive rail and truck shipments of building materials from suppliers. Products will then be quickly loaded as customized orders on flatbed trucks destined for our stores along the West Coast.”

He said the approximately 240,000-sq.-ft. flatbed facility, which will be the 14th such regional flatbed center operated by Lowe’s in the U.S., is situated on a 23-acre site. Shipping operations are expected to begin in the first half.
