Taking weight and cost out of the Class 8 Granite vocational straight truck, Mack Trucks has announced a new “medium heavy-duty” (MHD)model intended for municipal and other cost-sensitive applications. The new Granite MHD is being offered in both set-forward and set-back axle configurations. Power is supplied by Cummins’ ISL9 diesel, which can be mated with either an Allison automatic or Eaton manual transmission.

“In the current economic environment, companies are taking an even harder look at how much truck they truly need,” said Curtis Dorwart, Mack vocational products marketing manager. “Our new Granite Medium Heavy-Duty delivers just the right amount of Mack’s legendary strength, durability and reliability, along with valuable weight and cost savings.”

The company has also announced a number of other changes for its vocational truck lineup, including a new 36-in. flat-top sleeper for the Granite. Other changes for the Granite include a new vinyl and leather interior trim option, availability of the new Allison 3000 Series automatic transmission, a one-piece windshield option and a cab-mounted exhaust option.

Mack’s heavy-haul Titan vocational tractor will also be offered with the new trim and windshield option, according to the OEM.
