Steve Robinson, director of OEM sales & dealer programs for Pressure Systems International (PSI), recently detailed the safety, environmental and cost benefits of PSI’s Meritor Tire Inflation System (MTIS) to attendees of the annual National Trailer Dealer Assn. convention in Palm Springs, CA.
Robinson noted that automatic tire inflations systems have been recognized by EPA’s SmartWay Partnership as a technology that “significantly reduces fuel use and emissions.” He pointed out that a range of tests has shown that such technology can result in a 1.8% improvement in fuel economy, 10% longer tread life, lower tire maintenance costs, and reduced or eliminated roadside service calls.
He added that PSI’s new ThermALERT technology, available as an option on MTIS, can significantly improve fleet safety by warning a driver about excessive heat building up in the wheel end of a trailer tire before a catastrophic accident occurs from wheel loss or before a trailer fire results.
Robinson pointed out that the ThermALERT option now represents 41% of PSI’s production because fleet operators are increasingly asking for this early-warning system.
