LAS VEGAS. The Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program lauded the accomplishments of 37 partner organizations—motor carriers, shippers logistic service providers and trucking affiliate companies—during an awards ceremony here at the annual American Trucking Assns. (ATA) conference.

The 37 firms were all named winners of 2009 SmartWay Excellence Awards. According to SmartWay, the honorees collectively will cut more than $1.3 billion in fuel costs in 2009 while eliminating six million tons of CO2 and saving more than 540 million gals. of diesel fuel.

“EPA’s SmartWay partnership helps freight companies go the extra mile by saving fuel and money, while cutting air pollution,” said Gina McCarthy, Assistant Administrator, EPA Office of Air and Radiation. “Within our nation’s hard-working freight sector, SmartWay Excellence Award winners have stepped up to help protect our health, climate and environment.”

The companies honored have been investing in clean truck technologies, adopting freight management strategies to reduce carbon emissions and promoting the benefits of the SmartWay Transport Partnership.

The EPA launched SmartWay in 2004 and today more than 2,000 organizations – both large and small - are associated with the organization.
